Beware Seasonal Phishing Campaigns

This is the time of year when scammers and crooks seem to lurk around every online corner.  OpenDNS has a good article outlining some of the common, popular and tricky, holiday phishing scams you should try to avoid.   While you are there, try out your ability to smell a phish with the Phishing Quiz Erin posted here.  “Bone up, take note, and avoid getting duped.”

OpenDNS is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your home network connected loves ones from phishing, malware, and forgeries.  Education and proactive protection are definitely the keys.   Oh, and it’s still FREE!

If you have an OpenDNS account, I would also suggest that you add these 5 domains to your block list:

  • .cc.ai
  • .nl.ai
  • .c0m.li
  • .cd.am
  • .coom.in

That will cut down significantly on the volume of evil that comes down the pipe to your IP address.  Might be worth testing and blocking if necessary on SurfControl, WebSense and other filters.  Check out the SANS article for details.  Enjoy your New Years safely, and tip your wait staff…

  1. Mark what a great and timely blog post. We’re always so thrilled with OpenDNS users take time out to blog about our service, but especially during the busy holiday season. We’d love to send you a t-shirt and some stickers as a tiny show of thanks for helping us fight the good fight against Internet crooks by spreading the word on OpenDNS! Give me a shout with your size and address.

  2. I like the quiz. Even people who work with online business have to watch closeley to spot the scam. Though I think it’s easier to recognize the emails.
